You've probably noticed it in your community. Farmers markets are popping up everywhere. Boxes of produce from CSAs are appearing on the doorsteps of residential homes in your neigborhood. Instead of lemonade, kids are putting up roadside stands for fruits and vegetables with a box and a slot for your coins and bills.
It's the same in Hawaii.
The Kauai Culinary Market on the south shore of Kauai is the newest such endeavor that I've discovered. It's a little different than traditional farmers markets on Kauai where vendors sell produce out of the backs of their pick up trucks situated on the side of a baseball field.
Here, on Wednesday afternoons, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m., at Kukuiula Village shopping center, a few farmers sell a limited supply of papayas, mangoes, greens and soursops, hopefully this selection will grow as more people learn about the market itself.
What I found unique about this market was:
1. The Right Slice: a hand-made pie vendor operating out of Hanapepe with ono-licious pie varieties, including my favorite Mango-Lilikoi and Tropical Banana, Chocolate Coconut, Island Lime, Lilikoi Cheesecake and Chocolate Chip Macadamia Nut. (If you miss the Kauai Culinary Market on Wednesday, she also sells--by the slice and whole pies--at Friday Night Art Nights in Hanapepe.)
2. Moloaa Bay Coffee: a small farmer selling coffee and tea grown in the small ahupuaa of Moloaa on Kauai's northeast shore.
3. Monkeypod Jams: Kauai-made jams and jelly.
4. Salty Wahine: Spices and rubs using primarily organic and primarily Hawaii ingredients.
In honor of the Koloa Plantation Days festival last week, "Sweet Treats" were made on the premises. We're talking traditional sweets from Hawaii that kids grow up eating and visitors must try. Like: Banana lumpia, sweet potato lumpia, malasadas and mochi. Here, from Na Kane O Keoneloa--a men's hula troupe on Kauai--is a recipe for banana lumpia.
Banana Lumpia Ingredients:
Separate lumpia wrappers. Peel banana and cut in half, then again, lengthwise. You should have 4 pieces. Roll each piece of banana in brown sugar. Place 1 piece of banana on lumpia wrapper. Fold the bottom end of the lumpia up, roll once, then fold in the sides. Roll the rest of the wrapper until you reach the end. Brush a little egg on the end of the wrapper to seal. Deep fry in hot oil until golden brown. Delicious served with vanilla ice cream.
*Note: Lumpia can be made ahead of time and kept raw, frozen until ready to be cooked and served.
**Variation: For sweet potato lumpia, steam or boil sweet potatoes, mash so still slightly lumpy. Add enough melted butter to bind and pipe or spoon onto lumpia wrapper and fold.
